CIDA Accreditation Granted to Honours Bachelor of Interior Design

Sheridan is pleased to announce that the Accreditation Commission of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) has approved the Honours Bachelor of Interior Design program for CIDA accreditation.

Sheridan Students Sweep Level Up Showcase in Toronto

Fourth year students from Sheridan’s Honours Bachelor of Game Design were the big winners at the seventh annual Level Up Student Showcase held at the Design Exchange in Toronto. The students won 10 of the 12 awards available in the four categories of Best Overall Game, Technical Innovation, Artistic Achievement and People’s Choice Award, where a first, second and third prize are up for grabs in each category.

Academy Award Winner Brenda Chapman Visits Sheridan to Discuss Storytelling

Writer, animation story artist and director Brenda Chapman recently visited Trafalgar campus to speak to Sheridan Bachelor of Animation and Computer Animation students about the techniques and strategies of visual storytelling.

Sheridan Alumni Take Home Canadian Screen Awards

Sheridan alumni’s impact on the Canadian media scene was acknowledged last week, when two graduates won Canadian Screen Awards (CSAs). The CSAs celebrate Canadian productions and talent in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes in film, television and digital media.

Visual Merchandising Arts Program tells the story of Chanie Wenjack and the Secret Path

Be on the lookout for a new window display by the Visual Merchandising Arts program on Trafalgar campus. As part of a new series of Progressive Window Displays dedicated towards generating social awareness through visual communication, the current installation has been created to inform and engage the Sheridan community about The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.

Sheridan Graduate takes home Oscar for Piper

Sheridan alumnus Alan Barillaro has won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. The 1996 animation graduate directed the short film Piper. Animation alumni were also part of the team that worked on Zootopia, the winner of this year’s Best Animated Feature.

Three Sheridan alumni receive Annie Awards

Alumni from Sheridan College’s renowned animation and film programs were honoured this weekend at the 44th annual Annie Awards in Los Angeles, California. The awards are the top prize given out by the International Animated Film Society to recognize excellence.

Design Students Unveil Exhibition in 2017 Toronto Offsite Design Festival

For the first time, this year the York University/Sheridan College Program in Design participated in the Toronto Offsite Design Festival. Inviting audiences to “Engage in the Unexpected”, the graduating class unveiled a preview of YSDN2017, the branding philosophy behind their capstone showcase.

The Golden Globe nominees have been announced, and once again, several films in the Best Animated Motion Picture category had Sheridan alumni on their creative teams.

Sheridan Faculty, Students and Alumni win Multiple Awards with Craft Ontario

Since 1981, Craft Ontario has awarded their prestigious Craft Awards to recipients who have proven to be accomplished and dedicated practitioners in the field of craft and design. This year, 9 of the Craft Award winners are current/past students of Sheridan’s Craft and Design Program, and both of the nomination recipients of the Margaret Reid award are Sheridan grads.

Sheridan signs historic co-development agreement with Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre

Sheridan College took part last week in a Commercial Signing Ceremony held in Shanghai, China, and witnessed by the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Minister of International Trade. The agreement, signed by Michael Rubinoff, Associate Dean of Visual and Performing Arts, and Yang Shaolin, General Manager of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, is focused on the co-development of a new musical based on the life of Dr. Norman Bethune.

Musical Developed at Sheridan is Broadway-bound

Come From Away, originally developed and produced by Sheridan and the Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP), is headed to Broadway in the spring of 2017. Sheridan has built a reputation for producing music theatre graduates who go on to grace the stages of Broadway. But the College is now playing a ground-floor role in the development of a musical destined for theatre’s mecca.

The arts and design programs in our faculty are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, or to use their nomenclature for non-U.S. Institutions—we are “substantially equivalent.” Sheridan is only the second institution in Canada to receive this prestigious accreditation. Animation Career Review released their top 100 international Animation school rankings with Sheridan in third place worldwide. The review said of Sheridan "This is one of the most respected schools in the world by students and other schools alike."

Our Faculty

Dean, Faculty of Animation, Arts & Design

Ronni Rosenberg taught for a number of years in the York/Sheridan Joint Program in Design where she pursued her interest in developing the language, education, and literacy of the built environment. In 2007, she was invited to join the administrative team of the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, and in 2010, she assumed the role of Dean. Ronni has served as a board member for arts organizations such as Oakville Galleries and the Toronto Public Art Commission. She also worked with the North York Board of Education to develop an inter-disciplinary architectural curriculum for secondary schools. She is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects and is a Registered Graphic Designer of Ontario. She has contributed towards numerous organizations and publications such as AIGA Journal and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and Jerusalem Report.

Associate Dean, Design, Illustration & Photography

Donna Braggins oversees Sheridan's Design, Illustration, Photography, Interaction Design and Web Design programs. She has previously served as art director of Maclean’s and Canadian Business magazines and president of the National Magazine Awards Foundation. Currently, she serves on the board of the Registered Graphic Designers and the Curriculum Committee of Magazines Canada. Her work has won widespread recognition, with many national and international awards including the National Magazine Awards Foundation, as well as a Certificate of Excellence from the New York Type Directors Club. During her tenure at Canadian Business magazine, the publication was honoured twice as Magazine of the Year in its circulation category by the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors.

Associate Dean, Visual and Performing Arts

Michael is the producer of Theatre Sheridan and the Dean of Visual and Performing Arts. In 2011, he established the Canadian Music Theatre Project at Sheridan - an incubator for new musical theatre works by Canadian and international artists. His productions have earned one Dora Mavor Moore Award for excellence in Toronto theatre and six nominations. He is a 2004 graduate of the Commercial Theatre Institute, Intensive Producing Program and was President of ScriptLab, a not-for-profit organization in Toronto with a commitment to the development of the works and the artists of the Canadian Musical Theatre. Michael is also President of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, chair of their Commercial Theatre Development Fund and the founder of M. Rubinoff Productions Inc.

Associate Dean, Film, Television & Journalism

Maija Saari is the Associate Dean for the Department of Film, Television and Journalism, leading media professional practice programs in Film, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Foundations and Makeup for Media and Creative Arts. She is a passionate educator with a deep interest in how rapidly changing technology is affecting media practice and professional identity. Through the course of teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels in university and college settings, Maija ultimately specialized her educational practice upon the intersection between theory and practice in professional practice curriculum. Maija brings over 20 years of teaching, scholarship, academic leadership and professional industry practice to her portfolio. She joined Sheridan as an Associate Dean in August 2014.

Associate Dean, Animation and Game Design

Angela is the Associate Dean of the Department of Animation and Game Design which includes programs such as Bachelor of Animation, Bachelor of Game Design, Computer Animation, Character Animation, Visual Effects, Music Composition for Stage & Visual Media (MASSIVE) and Game Level Design. With over twenty years of experience in animation, film and digital media education at the post-secondary level, Angela is a champion of the excellence in arts education. She studied in three countries, achieving a BA from Brock University, a MA from State University of New York at Buffalo, and a PhD from the University of Bristol. She has been at Sheridan College since August 2003. She is committed to fostering partnerships between the Faculty, the industry, cultural institutions, and domestic and international colleges and universities.

Associate Dean, Material Arts & Design

Heather Whitton was appointed Associate Dean in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design in 2007. She provides academic leadership for the following programs: Bachelor of Interior Design, Bachelor of Craft and Design (Ceramics, Glass, Furniture, Textiles and Industrial Design), Visual & Creative Arts diploma and advanced diploma, Interior Decorating diploma, Visual Merchandising Arts diploma and Art Fundamentals certificate. Upon graduation from CIA, Heather practiced design at several Toronto firms before establishing her own graphic design consultancy. A few of her corporate clients included Marks and Spencer, Hudson’s Bay Company, Simpson’s, Fabergé and Corporate Foods among many others. She has consulted on design education for the Design Exchange in Toronto and presently sits on the Design Advisory Committee for Harbourfront.
